How long do you have to be delayed before compensation?

Under EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers may be entitled to compensation for flight delays depending on the length of the delay and the distance of the flight. Here's what you need to know:
Short-haul Flights (up to 1,500km)
- Delays of 2 hours or more: Right to care (meals, refreshments)
- Delays of 3 hours or more: €250 compensation
Medium-haul Flights (1,500km - 3,500km)
- Delays of 3 hours or more: €400 compensation
- Right to care after 2 hours
Long-haul Flights (over 3,500km)
- Delays of 4 hours or more: €600 compensation
- Right to care after 2 hours
Important Conditions
- The flight must depart from an EU airport, or arrive at an EU airport on an EU carrier
- The delay must not be caused by extraordinary circumstances
- You must have a confirmed reservation and have checked in on time
How to Claim
- Keep all your travel documents and boarding passes
- Document the delay and any communication with the airline
- Contact the airline directly first
- If unsuccessful, contact your national enforcement body
- Consider using a claims management company as a last resort
